Beyond the fighter, the titles, and the recognition stands a man whose greatest strength comes from his faith, his family, and his commitment to lifting others.

By Andrea Benitez

I met China Smith many years ago, and through the years, I have come to consider him a good friend. Beyond the champion recognized by the world, I have personally witnessed a caring and generous man who offers godly advice, encourages others, and consistently gives back to his community. His willingness to help people has always revealed the heart behind the fighter.

His story is not defined only by victories, titles, or the applause that followed his success. It is also a story of perseverance, humility, and purpose. China has faced challenges that could have discouraged him, yet he continued to move forward, trusting God and remaining committed to the path before him.

What makes his journey especially meaningful is the way he has used his experiences to encourage others. He understands the discipline required to overcome obstacles, the importance of staying focused, and the value of having people who believe in you. Because of that understanding, he has become a source of strength to many who are working to find their own way.

China’s influence reaches beyond the boxing community. He has shown that true success is not measured only by what a person achieves for himself, but also by what he is willing to do for others. Through his words, his actions, and his example, he continues to demonstrate that a champion’s greatest legacy is found in the lives he touches.

I wanted to go beyond the championship titles and introduce readers to the man I have been blessed to know. In this conversation, China speaks openly about the young boy with a dream, the sacrifices required to become a champion, the faith that carried him through private battles, and the surrender that became one of his greatest victories.

The Young Man Behind the Champion

Andrea: Before the world knew you as a champion, who was China Smith, the young man with a dream?

China: I knew I was going to be a star even before I became a champion. I knew I wanted to be somebody great, not just for myself, but so I could help my mom, my dad, and my family.

I remember giving a speech at my prekindergarten graduation. I said it loud and clear: “I want to be a professional football player or a boxer.” Even at that young age, I knew I wanted to become somebody great.

Andrea: What first drew you to boxing, and what did stepping into the ring give you that you were searching for at the time?

China: I would say I became interested in boxing and football by following in my dad’s footsteps. When I was younger, I was motivated by fame and recognition. As I became a man, however, that desire evolved into something much bigger.

Boxing gave me recognition, but more importantly, it gave me opportunities and a platform to become someone people in my community could look to, trust, and turn to.

Andrea: What obstacles did you have to overcome before earning the title of world heavyweight boxing champion?

China: One of my greatest obstacles was learning to believe in my dreams and goals, even when things became difficult. I had to make the ultimate sacrifices and learn when to walk away from certain things that were not aligned with my purpose or vision.

Becoming a champion required discipline, faith, sacrifice, and the willingness to remain committed to the path God placed before me.

Andrea: Was there ever a moment when you wanted to give up? What gave you the strength to keep fighting?

China: I do not like to use the words “give up,” but there were definitely times when I questioned myself. I wondered, “Am I good enough? Am I really going to make it through this next obstacle or challenge?”

There was always a burning desire within me, something I believe came from God and from my dad, that pushed me to keep going.

As I have gotten older, I have also learned to use doubt and the voices of people who do not believe in me as motivation and inspiration. Instead of allowing those voices to stop me, I let them fuel me.

Andrea: What did becoming a champion mean to you beyond the titles, trophies, and recognition?

China: Becoming a champion confirmed to me that I was somebody. It gave me notoriety and the support of my hometown, but it also gave me something much more important: responsibility.

Once people began looking up to me as a hometown hero, I understood that I had a greater responsibility to become someone my community could be proud of and someone others could look to for inspiration.

Andrea: Boxing taught you how to fight physical battles. How did life teach you to fight spiritual and emotional ones?

China: My parents played a major role in that. Growing up in church gave me a foundation of faith and taught me from an early age that God would never leave me nor forsake me.

As I have gotten older, my relationship with God and my spiritual understanding have grown to an entirely different level. That journey has taught me how to fight battles that cannot be won with physical strength alone. That is really another story for the next interview.

Faith, Surrender, and Purpose

Andrea: What was happening in your life when you decided to surrender yourself fully to Jesus?

China: The short version is that I have surrendered my life to God as best as I know how, especially during the most important seasons of my life. But there have also been times when I realized that I was walking in directions that were not aligned with Christ.

When that happens, I have to be honest enough to say, “That is on me, not Him.” Surrender has taught me to recognize when I am moving away from God’s purpose and to find my way back to Him.

Andrea: How did your relationship with God change the way you saw yourself, your purpose, and your future?

China: My relationship with God taught me that with God, anything and everything is possible. There were times when I set out to accomplish one thing, but God had a different purpose for me.

I have had to learn that sometimes God will redirect you because He wants to use you for something greater than what you originally planned. I have failed many times, but by His grace, He has allowed me to keep moving forward.

My purpose is not only about what I want to accomplish. It is about allowing God to use my life to do His work.

Andrea: What does surrender mean to you today, and why do you consider it one of your greatest victories?

China: Surrender means putting it in God’s hands and walking away knowing you have done everything you can do. It means trusting the process, trusting God, and believing He is working even when I cannot see how things are going to turn out.

I always return to the belief that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Even when I have doubts, I remind myself that God is still working in my favor.

Andrea: How has faith helped you face battles that could not be won inside a boxing ring?

China: Faith has taught me that no matter how powerful I think I am or how much I believe I can handle on my own, there are battles I simply cannot win by my own strength.

There have been times in my life when I made it through something that I know I could not have overcome by myself. It was not by my might. It was by God’s might. It was only by His grace.

Andrea: What has God healed or restored within you since you placed your life in His hands?

China: Every day that God wakes me up is a blessing. One of the experiences that truly tested my faith was going through surgery and waiting for the results. Everything came back benign, but I did not fully understand the seriousness of the situation until the very last moment.

That was when my faith truly became active. When my thoughts and fears started trying to take over, I had to trust God.

That experience reminded me that sometimes you do not realize how strong your faith is until you have no choice but to rely on it.

Becoming a Mentor and Role Model

Andrea: How did your past experiences prepare you to become a mentor and role model for young people?

China: I have been blessed to have many people in my life who guided, supported, and helped me become the man I am today. I have taken the lessons they taught me and used them as a foundation to help others.

Now I feel a responsibility to give back what was given to me. I want to guide the next generation, encourage them, and help them avoid some of the mistakes I made along the way.

Andrea: Through ChinaTown941 and Author China Smith, what message do you hope to give every child you serve?

China: Honestly, my message is not only for children. It is for everyone, including our community, our youth, and our leaders.

I am the “People’s Champ,” and I want people to understand that there is an unbelievable strength inside every one of us. Sometimes you simply have to discover it, believe in it, and learn how to use it.

Andrea: When you meet a young person who feels forgotten, discouraged, or lost, what do you want them to understand about their worth?

China: I want them to know that they are not alone and that their life has value.

Their worth is already inside them. Sometimes they simply need someone to remind them of it. I want young people to understand that their story, their struggles, and their future can be valuable and inspiring. It all begins with believing in themselves.

Andrea: Why is it important for successful people to return to their communities and help the next generation rise?

China: Because we have a responsibility to continue building the future.

Success should not stop with one person. When you have been blessed with opportunities, knowledge, or resources, you should use them to help build a stronger foundation for the people coming behind you. That is how communities grow and future generations rise.

The People Who Stood Beside Him

Andrea: Who stood beside you during your most difficult seasons, and how did their love affect your journey?

China: God. I truly believe that.

Of course, my mom and dad have been there for me, and their love and support have meant everything. But when I look back over my entire journey, I have to give the ultimate credit to God. It has truly been all God.

Andrea: When people hear the name China Smith today, what do you hope they see beyond the fighter and the champion?

China: I want them to see a man of God and a man of honor.

The championship is part of my story, but it is not the entirety of who I am. I want my character, my faith, and the way I serve others to be what people remember most.

Andrea: What dreams and goals has God still placed upon your heart?

China: My dream is to rebuild my community by changing the lives of people around the world.

I believe God has given me a platform for a reason, and I want to use that platform to make a difference. I want to inspire people, empower communities, and help others realize the potential God has placed inside them.

A Champion’s Message of Victory

Andrea: If you could speak directly to someone fighting a private battle today, what message of faith, hope, and victory would you give them?

China: Take a step back and remember that the battle is not always yours to fight alone. Sometimes you have to pause, regroup, and allow God to show you what He wants you to learn from the situation.

Trust that there is a purpose, even in the struggle. What you are going through today may be preparing you to help save or encourage someone else who will face a similar battle tomorrow.

Do not let the battle define you. Let God use it to develop you, strengthen you, and ultimately use your story to help someone else.

Beyond the Championship

China Smith became a champion by learning how to fight, but his greatest strength was revealed when he learned how to surrender.

His championship will always remain an important part of his story, but it does not define the entirety of the man. His faith, character, compassion, and service reveal a victory that no title or trophy could ever measure.

China’s journey reminds us that surrendering to God is not a sign of weakness. Sometimes surrender is the bravest decision we can make. It is the moment we stop trying to carry every battle alone and allow God to lead us toward a purpose greater than the one we imagined for ourselves.

The young boy who once announced that he would become a professional athlete grew into a champion. The champion then discovered a calling greater than recognition.

Today, China Smith continues to fight,

but not only for himself. He fights for his community, for young people who need someone to believe in them, and for every person who has forgotten the strength and value God placed within them.

Inside the ring, China learned how to defeat an opponent.

Through faith, he learned that some of life’s greatest victories begin when we place the battle in God’s hands.
