Each month, Raíces will share a story that connects heritage with hope and reminds us that our beginnings remain part of everything we become.

The Roots We Carry.

Written by Andrea Benitez

Our roots are more than the places where we were born. They live in our language, our music, our food, our faith, and the values passed from one generation to the next. They remind us who we are, even when life carries us far from home.

For many Latinos, leaving their country is one of the most painful and courageous decisions they will ever make. They leave behind parents, children, siblings, friends, familiar streets, and traditions woven into their everyday lives. They do not leave because they have forgotten where they come from. They leave because they are searching for safety, stability, and greater opportunities for their families.

Many arrive in the United States after having built respected professional lives in their home countries. They were doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, scientists, nurses, entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders. Yet they often come here with humility, willing to begin again. Some accept jobs far removed from the careers they once held while learning a new language, adapting to a different culture, and rebuilding their lives from the ground up.

Others are escaping corrupt governments, political instability, violence, poverty, or systems that have made it nearly impossible to build a secure future. Some simply want their children to have access to education, safety, and opportunities they themselves were never given.

Beginning again does not erase their knowledge, dignity, or accomplishments. A professional title may not immediately transfer across a border, but intelligence, discipline, resilience, and purpose travel with us.

The Latino community has contributed profoundly to the United States. Our people serve as doctors, educators, engineers, business owners, public servants, artists, farmers, caregivers, members of the military, and leaders in nearly every part of American life. Through hard work, family values, creativity, and determination, generations of Latinos have helped strengthen the nation they now call home.

Our culture teaches us that family is sacred. We gather around food, music, stories, celebrations, and faith. We carry the voices of our parents and grandparents with us. Even across oceans and borders, the love connecting our families remains unbroken.

As a Dominican woman who came to this country as a very young child, I understand what it means to grow in one place while carrying another place within your heart. My roots have never limited me; they have strengthened me. They remind me of the sacrifices that came before me and my responsibility to honor them by living with courage, gratitude, and purpose.

Raíces was created to celebrate those stories. It is a place where culture, identity, and belonging meet and where we remember that starting again does not mean leaving ourselves behind.

We are not defined only by where we live today. We are also shaped by every prayer, sacrifice, tradition, and dream that brought us here.

This is what happens when strong roots are given the courage to rise.
